Tip Calculator

Type in the bill, choose how much you want to tip, and say how many people are paying. You get the tip, the total and each person’s share straight away.

Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Tip$0.00
Total$0.00
Tip per person$0.00
Total per person$0.00

How it works

The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percent, then divided by 100. The total is the bill plus the tip. To split it, the total is divided by the number of people.

Amounts are rounded to the nearest cent. If you turn on “round total up”, the total goes up to the next whole dollar and the extra cents are added to the tip, so the tip you leave matches what you actually pay.

Tip on the pre-tax amount if you want to follow the common rule of thumb. Many people tip on the full bill including tax because it is easier. Both are fine; use whichever you are comfortable with.

tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100
total = bill + tip
per person = total ÷ people

Worked example: Dinner for three

The bill is $85.50 and you want to tip 20%. The tip is $17.10, so the total is $102.60.

Split three ways, each person pays $34.20, and each person’s share of the tip is $5.70.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

It depends on the country and the service. In the United States, 15% to 20% is common for table service. In many other countries a smaller tip, or none, is normal. When in doubt, ask a local.

Should I tip on the price before or after tax?

Either is accepted. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is the traditional rule, while tipping on the full bill is simpler and slightly more generous.

How do I split the bill unevenly?

Use the calculator for each person’s own part of the bill, one at a time. Add the shared items to each person’s part first, then enter that number as the bill.

What does “round total up” do?

It raises the total to the next whole dollar and puts the extra cents into the tip. It is handy when paying in cash.

Does this work in other currencies?

Yes. The maths is the same for any currency. The results are shown with a dollar sign, so just read them as your own currency.
